6 Scams Americans Think Are Normal

1. Tipping because salaries are not big

As we already know, when you are in America, you have to be generous when it comes to tipping, whether we’re talking about servers, waiters, bussers, or drivers.

As bad as this might sound, we have to admit the fact that their salaries are not big at all. For example, a few years ago, I worked for three months as an event server at a hotel, and I was paid only $3.5 an hour. I was serving food and beverages at weddings and other events like this and the guests used to pay more than what I was making per hour.

There are also restaurants or locales where it is written on the receipt that you have to pay the waiter or the server 25% out of your order. Unfortunately, in the U.S. these people make more money out of tipping, due to their low wages.

2. Time off

We have no idea if this is a result of corporate thinking or not, one thing is for sure: even though Americans have a lot of days worth of annual leave per year, they tend to not get them.

According to a 2014 survey, it has been found that 28% of people didn’t take their vacation day due to the fact that they want to demonstrate how much they like their jobs and they didn’t want to be seen as bums.

In other countries, people are extremely excited to take advantage of their time off and paid leave. In addition to that, according to several studies, it has been found that people who go on holiday or take a few days off to relax, are actually more productive.

3. “Everyone should go to college” – mentality

People in America believe that everyone should go to college after they finish high school. If they don’t have enough money to pay for college or to get a scholarship, they can go to banks and ask for a student loan.

On the other hand, in other countries, like France, for example, people take a year off to travel and to discover what their interests actually are, and after that, they decide if they want to go to college or not.

In addition to that, there are many countries where college is not expensive. However, we have to admit to the fact that some of these universities are not the best.
