Nestle and the baby formula scandal
The world’s largest packaged food company came under fire in the 1970s over accusations it promoted bottle feeding and discouraged breastfeeding in developing countries, in the attempt to sell more of their products.
The aggressive campaign happened especially in areas where water supplies were impure and precarious and bottle feeding was not a safe option. Nestle’s actions were boycotted by many social activists, with one group’s boycott lasting for seven years.
