If you are on duty but your employer is not paying you for your work or your extra hours, that time belongs to the company. Unfortunately, the law cannot help you out either. Here’s an example. The Supreme Court decided that Amazon is not required to pay its employees for their time wasted during security screening to get to their departments. This means they have to account for security screening time when leaving for work, if they want to arrive on time to do their job.

 

Not giving all your tips

You might be happy that you’re making a lot of tips at your job but your employer might also be happy that some of that amount can go into their pocket. How? There are various ways employers can take your tips, either by passing on fees for credit card tips, use a part of them to pay undocumented employees (chefs, dish washers etc) or simply take some money out of the tips jar.

It might be useful to keep track of your own tips, especially with the tax season upon us, but if this doesn’t work, collective action against your employer might prove more effective in getting your money back.
