6. Swedish meatballs

Well, this news actually made me sad. I have a lot of friends from Sweden, and one of my favorite dishes is Swedish meatballs, of course.

And what a delicious sauce they have! I mean, you can’t just skip them every time you go shopping at Ikea.

A lot of people, based on the name, think this dish has a Scandinavian provenance, but it is actually from Turkey. How is this possible? Well, it is.

Actually, Turkish people aren’t the only ones with this idea. In China, rolling meat into balls is also pretty common. Because it’s easier to eat and, let’s be honest, easier to make as well.

This Turkish recipe was introduced into Scandinavia in the 18th century by King Charles XII. In Turkey, they are known as “kofte,” and the meat used is usually beef and lamb, with a lot of other tasty ingredients like eggs, parsley, salt, pepper, onions, and bread crumbs to make them stay in one piece.

In Sweden, people use pork meat for their meatballs.

What type of meat do you prefer?
