Mothballs

People have been using mothballs to control moths, silverfish and other fiber pests in natural fiber clothing and materials, for years. But mothballs should be used with care, as recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

That’s because these pesticides contain either naphthalene or paradichlorobenzene and “breathing the fumes may cause headaches and dizziness and may irritate the skin, eyes, and throat. Extended exposure to the vapors may result in cataract formation and liver damage,” according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Fortunately, there are safer ways to keep moths and other pests away from your fabrics. For instance, Oregon State University’s Extension Service recommends storing them in airtight containers. You can also replace mothballs with lavender satchels, white camphor oil or even mint.
