Couches
Your couch might be comfortable but that doesn’t make it safe. That’s because upholstered furniture often undergoes flame-retardant treatments; unfortunately, this type of procedure has been linked to serious health problems such as cancer, according to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).
For this reason, many flame-retardant products have been withdrawn or removed from the market, but they’re persistent and bioaccumulative, which means they can linger in the environment or in products for years.
The safer choice? Furniture filled with cotton, polyester or wool instead of polyurethane foam.
