History

The Democratic Party is associated with the well-known Democratic donkey, which was first seen in Andrew Jackson’s 1828 presidential campaign. After being called “a donkey” by his political opponent, Andrey Jackson decided to use the image of this animal, which he believed was smart, brave, and incredibly strong-willed.

The symbol soon became famous, and the Democratic Party started using it as an anti-Federal faction and soon became one of the leading forces in America. On the other side, the Republican Party (or GOP, short for Grand Old Party), is symbolized through the Republican elephant. In 1874, Thomas Nast was the first to introduce the elephant in one of his cartoons, which was considered to be a strong and dignified animal.
