10 Unexpected Things That Decrease Your Property Value

Carpets all over the place

If it’s not Aladdin’s carpet, you are probably better off without it. That’s because carpets deteriorate rather quickly, aren’t easy to clean and retain all sorts of odors. More than that, offbeat colors tend to put off many buyers. Why stick to something that’s a big turnoff?

Instead of carpeting your entire home, opt for hardwood or laminated flooring. It’s not only easier to maintain and clean but according to a recent study, 55 percent of home buyers are apparently willing to pay more for hardwood floors.

A garage transformation

Car ownership in the U.S. is at a high in recent years, with 93.3% of households having at least one light vehicle at their disposal. This means having a place to park your car is a must, with garages on top of the pyramid. Consequently, if you turn your garage into a gym, playroom, home office, or anything else besides its designed purpose, it is a quick way to decrease your property value. It’s really no surprise given that most buyers want a place to park their cars and store yard equipment.

This does not mean you cannot use your garage for other purposes, but you should do it in a way that allows you to turn it back into a conventional garage.

  1. Hello,
I certainly don’t agree with some of your “Unexpected Home Cost Decreasers” In fact some of the very things you advise against, appealed to me. So, it really boils down to the individual buyer who may want exactly what YOU don’t. For example, in each room, I’ve put down stunning Persian Carpet that is framed by a beautiful oak floor. Chacun à son gôut! That sun room on your list of “don’ts” (with the Persian carpet and oak wood floor) sold me for that house.
    Thanks,
    Patrick
