Year-old apples

Wait, what? How is this even possible, you may ask yourself. You may not want to believe it but it’s true. You shouldn’t rely on the apples being straight from the orchard, no matter where they are in the stack. In order to keep the fruits in stores for the rest of the year in the United States, where they only mature between August and September, they must be chemically treated and maintained in cold storage. One investigation revealed that, on average, apples are 14 months old when they are stored in a warehouse, where they frequently sit for at least 9 to 12 months.

If it’s possible, try to buy your fruits as fresh as possible from the nearest farmer’s market!

Takeaway:

Even if a lot of the time, the primary fault belongs to the employees of the grocery stores, our fellow customers are not saints either. We’ve heard and seen many times how parents let their kids touch the fruits and vegetables and then put them back on the shelves. Or people who sneeze into their hands and right after continue to touch various products they don’t intend to buy. There are just too many factors that aren’t in your control that could lead to food contamination.

After this article, we hope you’ve learned a thing or two about how to reduce your chances of getting unintentionally sick from your next grocery shopping trip.
