8 Costco Items Way Too Expensive for Retirees

2. Refrigerated prepared meals

Sometimes it’s easier to buy something that’s already cooked simply because you didn’t have the necessary amount of time to meal prep for the whole week. But is this really a good idea? In most cases (at Costco as well), these foods lack flavor, are extremely expensive, and most likely use ingredients that are close to their expiration date.

Even if you’re in a hurry, you might choose a take-out restaurant meal for both price and quality because there are a lot of places that offer today’s specialties at good prices. Don’t forget that many restaurants and fast food chains offer senior discounts! All you have to do is ask politely.

  1. I do shop at Costco. I was just there today. I agree with your assessment. I never buy those items there. I figured that out on my own. Thanks. I enjoyed reading your article.

  2. It is true, the cost is justtoo high. It is useless paying for membership, for what, discount?
I wish they reduced the price or eliminate the membership charge. Thank you for information.

  3. Great lead on that email and then the goal to collect info. Direct Marketing at it’s best. MK former President American Marketing Association Phoenix Chapter.

  4. The big hoax of Costco. Don’t forget the amount of purchases required just to recover the membership cost. Rip off big time.

  5. My husband and I live in a semi-rural county. We joined Costco several years ago for when we need to buy high priced items or disposable things like toilet paper, paper towels, etc. But we are an hour and half away from either Costco so we do not buy fresh food, just sometimes canned or shelf goods.

  6. On toothpaste example, 1 tube of sensodyne at other than Costco is $13.99, and 4 pack Costco is $31.99, or $7.99 per tube. So Costco is much more affordable. Second, large chain grocery stores make it difficult to get any savings by using Digital coupons with a website that is too hard to navigate for savings, which most often are not equal to or less than Costco regular prices. Store staff are told not to help customers navigate site….simply too much hassle.
Next, quality of meats like Salmon, NY steak and other cuts (except chicken) are more lean USDA Choice, and Costco does not hide fatty portions tucked under the bottom of pack, where grocery store does. In addition, a Tbone steak at Costco has all portions the same with filet piece left on all steaks, and the butcher at the store puts two full Tbones and two without filet piece. This is essentially selling an inferior cut of meat at premium price. I will not shop major chains anymore. Go costco.

  7. There is no comparison between Costco’s Hass Avocados which are two to three times larger and have better flavor. And what in the world do you mean by Quality being better than Quality? Why not advise people to eat dog food?? (The cheap kind).

  8. Someone can’t do math. 4 tubes of toothpaste for $32 is certainly less expensive per tube($8) than the $14 tube at Ralphs.
