  • skip the cleaning process – this might not go well with everyone’s desire to have a clean and tidy house, but it is good news for those who are feeling lazy and are looking for an excuse to skip the cleaning process! In conformity with Chinese lore, it is believed that if you are cleaning on New Year’s Day, you are not cleaning just the bacteria and dust in your home, but the good luck that you have stored up for the next year. You shouldn’t sweep the house or even do your laundry on December 31st. If thinking about spending this night in a dirty and cluttered house gives you major anxiety, clean your house a few days before.
  • eat 12 grapes at midnight – if you find yourself in Spain on New Year’s Eve, don’t be surprised when people around you start eating 12 grapes at midnight! Each grape represents a month of the following year, and eating them will bring people good luck every day.
  • put some cash in your pocket – the more money you have in your wallet on December 31st, the more cash you will have for the next 12 months.
  • don’t loan any money – this one is the exact opposite of the previous superstition. It is believed that if you loan someone money on New Year’s Eve, you are going to be shelling out money to people all year long. Why risk it? Wait until January 2nd to show off your generosity!
  • put on some red underwear – if you are hoping that the next year will bring you some hot and spicy romantic adventures, make sure you whip out your red underwear before you start celebrating! According to people from Latin America, if you are wearing red underwear on New Year’s Eve, you will bring passionate relationships into your life for the following 12 months. And who doesn’t love a little romance?
  • no lobster or chicken – as delicious and nutritious as they are, you should stay away from eating chicken and lobster on the first day of the new year. This is because chickens have wings, which can make good luck fly away from you, and since lobsters can walk backwards, you can find yourself beating around the bush, and not evolving. It may not sound so good for everyone, but might be worth trying sticking to vegetables on this day.
