The fifth pocket on jeans
Surely, we’ve all noticed that tiny pocket on the side of denim jeans, aka the fifth pocket. The one that some use to put coins or folded pieces of paper inside but kind of small to really use for something relevant. So, then why is it there?
It turns out the fifth pocket was created for a very specific purpose: to hold the pocket watch. That’s right! In the mid-1800s jeans were a staple clothing item for gold miners in California. Another staple item was their delicate and pricey pocket watch which needed a safe, tight place of its own; and what better place than the extra pocket on their jeans?
