The half-belt on coats

Many of today’s clothes serve no other purpose than as fashion statements. Take the ripped jeans for example. It’s not like they are torn to allow your skin to breathe better. However, there are also many clothing items with features that may pass as fashion statements but have  completely different purposes. Such as the half-belt on coats, trenches and jackets.

Curious to know what it was designed for? Well, it seems that the half-belt was originally created for soldiers who also used their oversized jackets as blankets. To allow military men to walk freely and easily, they used the half belt to gather the material and hold it in place.
