1. They play chill music
Music can really change our mood and the way we behave in a certain period of time. Grocery stores know that, so they like to put chill music in the background to trick your brain into thinking that you are not rushed at all.
This way, you spend more time wandering around, checking out different products, adding them to your cart, and in the end, spending more money.
2. They put the alcohol and junk food at the end of the store
Another trick they like to use is to put the alcohol, sweets, or junk food in general in the last isles of the store. Even though you might not notice it at first, the reason they do that is to make you think that you deserve a treat after you’re done with your groceries.
There are many stores that are not very “user friendly”, which can make people feel lost and wander around in the store until they find what they’re looking for.
Given the fact that they’ve wasted a lot of time, they might want to reward themselves with a glass of something nice, a bar of chocolate, or a bag of chips.
3. Put essential products at the back
The reason why many grocery stores put the essential products in the back or even far away from each other is to make you look for them. While you do that, you have the chance to come across certain things you don’t actually need, but would want to buy along the way.
4. Place expensive products at eye level
If you look at the products that are at your eye level, whether you want them or not, you might reconsider your decision and end up buying them. That’s a trick they use to make you spend more money!
Another thing they do is to stock popular combinations next to each other, such as salsa and tortilla chips, to make you more likely to purchase both of them.
