Posting your children’s dance videos on YouTube

You must be really proud when your kid dances to the rhythm of disco music, sings a nursery song or does something funny and cute. After all, aren’t we all? So, what could possibly go wrong with sharing your little one’s talents with the online world? A lot of things. But the main one is that you could get sued for stealing intellectual property and no “I don’t own the rights to this song” disclaimer will ever save you. If you’re lucky, your video will simply be taken down but why take the chances?

“I usually chuckle when I see this disclaimer, as this means nothing,” she says. “I know adding music to our videos helps set the mood, but you need to be careful not to infringe on the songwriter’s rights.”

What you can do instead: If you want to share videos of your kids doing lip-syncing or dance battles, ask for permission to include copyrighted music or just stick to royalty-free songs.
