Original Copy of Your Will
It’s a good idea to keep copies of your will, your spouse’s will, and any other wills that might name you executor, in a safe deposit box. In fact, experts highly recommend it. What they advise against is keeping the original copy of your will there, even more so if you are the only owner of the deposit box.
The reason is that after you die, the procedure of the bank is to seal the safe deposit box until someone comes and proves that he or she is an executor with legal access to the contents of the deceased person’s box. This could generate additional and unwanted costs as well as delays in executing the will and transferring the inheritances to your heirs.
It’s better to give the original copy to your attorney or store it someplace where it can be easily accessed by your executor without jumping through all sorts of legal hoops.
