Passport
Unless you’re traveling around the world on a weekly basis, you don’t normally need to carry your passport with you 24/7. This might make you believe it’s better to store it in a safe deposit box where it won’t get lost, damaged or even stolen. Our recommendation: Think again.
It’s kind of the same situation with keeping money in a safe deposit box. An emergency could arise during non-banking hours, so what then? You might have to take an unplanned trip and be unable to due to the fact that you don’t have your passport handy.
“When we talk about important documents [to store in a safe deposit box], a passport would be a bad idea for that last-minute trip to Europe that you booked at 5 p.m. and your flight is at 9 p.m.,” says Rust Insurance Agency’s Simons, who recommends keeping the passport in your home safe. “If your passport is in the safe deposit box, you’re staying home.”
