1. Key Food
Key Food is unique in that its grocery stores are individually owned and operated. The cooperative is headquartered in Staten Island, with more than 315 stores found in Florida, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut.
According to Consumer Reports reader ratings, Key Food has the lowest score—69. Unfortunately, the store’s standards of cleanliness leave much to be desired. The floors don’t seem to be cleaned daily, and the restrooms can be quite dirty.
What does it take to improve a grocery store’s cleanliness score? According to experts, some of the key factors include:
Hand sanitizers. In the poultry section, in the vestibule, and in other germ-prone areas.
Spotless entries. Supermarkets that value cleanliness strive to keep the sidewalks outside their venues free of trash.
Gleaming floors. Polished concrete is becoming popular. Needless to say, shoppers tend to pay a lot of attention to it.
Restrooms. Newer designs with multiple stalls, bright lighting, air fresheners.
Quick spill cleanup. Messes are never ignored and are addressed immediately.
