GoFundMe scam
A very popular online scam, especially in recent years, is the GoFundMe scam. This type of online grift promotes a fake sob story and takes advantage of people’s generosity and soft spot.
A very famous example dates back to 2017 when a couple managed to raise $400,000 from 14,000 generous contributors for a homeless veteran. It turned out the story was fake and the three of them plotted the whole thing together. Next time you feel charitable, do some research first!
Scam coins
In many online scams, cryptocurrency is the most widespread form of payment. In a more sophisticated variation, the cryptocurrency has become the fraud itself.
In a so-called pump and dump scheme, cyber scammers artificially boost the value of a stock such as bitcoin to determine investors to rush and buy the profitable items. Once the schemers “dump” sell, the stock price decreases and investors lose what they invested. In 2018, such losses amounted to US$1.7 billion.
