As reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 23% of adults, roughly 55 million Americans, suffer from arthritis. Arthritis is the main cause of disability and is responsible for pain, aching, stiffness, and swelling of the joints.
“We know there is no single cause of RA, and indeed there may be many different causes that lead to the disease,” says Carl Ware, MD, head of the scientific advisory board of the Arthritis National Research Foundation and director of the Infectious and Inflammatory Disease Center at the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute. According to the CDC, Americans with arthritis spend an average of $2,117 on medical bills associated with this condition.
