Another eastern block Premier named in the leak was the current president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Elected in 2019, this former actor and comedian rose to power mainly, winning 73% of the vote, because he pledged to clean up his country’s notoriously corrupt and oligarch-influenced economy and railed against them for hiding their wealth in offshore companies.
However, it turns out that the joke was really on the Ukrainian people, as he too was named in the leaked documents. It shows that not only was the current president involved in many offshore companies himself, but just weeks before he won the election, he transferred his 25% stake in an offshore company to a friend who just happens to now work as the president’s top adviser.
