6. Pripyat: The Chernobyl Abandoned City
This is probably the saddest story in the entire history of Europe. I mostly mentioned buildings that were abandoned, while Pripyat is actually an entire CITY that’s been abandoned since 1986 after the nuclear disaster. The city has become a shell of what it once was, and many locals have mentioned that Pripyat used to be full of people who were carefree and led quiet lives. A lot of people were hired at the nuclear power plant, and nobody would have guessed the disaster that would come.
Thousands of families were forced to leave their houses, and they left with the hope that they’d return soon because nothing “bad” was truly happening and everything was just a formality. This makes me sad but also angry because this awful disaster devastated so many lives.
Unfortunately, the radiation levels from Pripyat are still too high, which makes it impossible to live there anymore. The location is still open to the public, but only on a limited basis.
