5. Thurmond, West Virginia

The railroad company kept this West Virginia town buzzing as a prosperous coal station in the early 1900s. Thurmond, a significant Chesapeake & Ohio Railway stop, featured everything: hotels, banks, a post office, and more. Unfortunately, its prosperity came to an end with the advent of the diesel train in the 1950s and the Great Depression.

If you want to visit this eerie place, which is supposed to be haunted, you can take a self-guided tour of the now-quiet town because the National Park Service has restored the depot and the town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. But be aware of the fact that you may need a map to get there if you are not familiar with the surroundings.

The place is seven miles long, along a twisting, narrow road.
