Alcohol
With restaurants and bars among the first places to close at the beginning of the pandemic, some temporarily, some permanently, people started consuming more alcohol at home. According to a study published in JAMA Network Open, the first few months of the pandemic saw a surge in retail alcohol sales in the United States.
By April 2020, alcohol sales increased by 71.3%, with an overall average sale increase of 58 percent throughout the year. As per the JAMA study, three out of four adults started consuming alcohol an average of 1 day more per month compared with 2019.
