How they treat service staff

How the person in front of you treats retail, food service, and hospitality workers can tell you loads about their personality. How so? Well, according to psychologists, this is called “the waiter rule”: when dealing with people in the services industry, you hold the position of power whereas the service staff is in a subordinate role. A person with self-respect would never disrespect others, no matter their status.

“A person who is nice to you but rude to the waiter, or to others, is not a nice person. Watch out for people who have a situational value system, who can turn the charm on and off depending on the status of the person they are interacting with,” warn Raytheon CEO Bill Swanson and Sara Lee CEO Brenda Barnes.
