Supermarkets are hiring to meet the increased demand
Sectors such as retail and hospitality have been forced to fire people but supermarkets, on the contrary, are hiring to cope with the huge demand and keep supply chains moving.
Tesco, Asda, Aldi, and Lidl said they would hire thousands of staff after shoppers cleared the shelves in a frenzy. They are advertising and encouraging people to go to their nearest store with a “view to starting work in a matter of days.”
The intention is also to help people whose jobs have been impacted by the virus by providing them with temporary jobs. “Temporarily expanding our teams is one way we can help support our colleagues and customers, whilst providing work to those that have had their employment affected by the current situation,” said Lidl GB chief executive Christian Haertnagel.
With 400 stores in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York and New Jersey, “Stop & Shop’s associates are doing extraordinary work to serve our customers and local communities during this unprecedented time, and we are looking forward to adding great new members to the team,” Maria Silvestri, senior vice president of human resources at Stop & Shop, said in a statement
Tesco, the UK’s biggest supermarket, wants to take on 20,000 temporary workers “to help feed the nation”, it said. “The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in an unprecedented increase in demand for food and household products,” the chain said.
