5. Not saying “please” and “thank you”

Saying “please” and “thank you” are basic etiquette rules and it’s a sign of proper manners, especially when talking to people in service positions. We’re so used to hearing the usual “Can I have a large Cappuccino?” that it seems like it’s normal to order you’re coffee like that. However, this is the kind of behavior that needs to go away, because you’re being rude and disrespectful.

According to Lee, most people don’t realize what an impact saying “please” and “thank you” can have on our everyday lives. Not only you can get your order faster, it could also make daily interactions less stressful for yourself and the service people talking to thousands of people every day.

6. Wearing too much perfume

Wearing too much perfume is rude, because not everyone’s going to like your fragrance preferences and they may cause serious headaches for certain people.

With perfume, a little goes a long way, so make sure you’re not using too much, unless you’d want to make certain sensitive individuals feel dizzy. This applies especially when riding on public transportation, Grotts said.

7. Requesting a house tour

While it’s normal to be a little curious to see your friend’s house when they invite you over for dinner, it’s certainly very rude to request a house tour. According to Karen Thomas, founder of Karen Thomas Etiquette, requesting a house tour when visiting someone’s house is one of the most common faux pas people make.

It’s impolite to do so because maybe the person you’re visiting didn’t have time to tidy up their home and you’ll make them feel uncomfortable or embarrassed.

According to Thomas, the only house tour that’s appropriate is when the person offers to show you around. Snooping around when you go to the bathroom is definitely not an option and it’s even more disrespectful.

8. “Actually” and “just” are rude words when used in a conversation

While these two words might seem harmless, they certainly have a huge impact when used in a conversation. For example, see the difference between “Our manager needs the assignment on his desk by 9” and “Actually, our manager needs the assignment on his desk by 9.”

The same goes for “just.” If you want to say “You need to relax a little” don’t say “You just need to relax a little” because you’ll sound a lot more impertinent. Even though these two words might come off as innocuous, they will minimize the position and concerns of the person you’re talking to.
