Fake charities
Christmas is the time to give back, so many people want to do good things and help others in distress. Unfortunately, it is also the season when people are most vulnerable and easy to convince. And this is exactly what scammers are doing year in, year out.
They use tragic stories such as a shooting, an earthquake, someone’s sad life story, to prey and exploit people’s desire to help. “Scammers — opportunists that they are — are relying on generous consumers to use their hearts, and not their heads, when donating to a charity or cause in the holiday spirit,” says Lauren Hall of Consumer Action.
