State or City?
“New York is a state AND a city. I’ve seen way too many people mess this up.”
The name’s so nice they’ve used it twice. But this does not mean you shouldn’t get your geographical facts straight. New York City is the largest city in New York State and the most populous in the United States. The state of New York, on the other hand, is divided into upstate and downstate and its capital is Albany. Now, repeat after me: New York City and New York State are two different things!
Lake or Ocean?
“As someone who grew up on the Great Lakes, they literally look like oceans. They have tides, you can surf during the winter, and when you fly over them, there are parts where — in every direction — all you will see is water.”
It’s true! Lake Michigan can get 2ft-4ft waves in the summer, while in the winter, they can actually get as high as 28ft. Plus, there are no hurricanes, tsunamis or shark attacks to disturb your peaceful swim in the crystal-clear waters. Take that, ocean!
