Big achievements

It seems like one of the main reasons many citizens would love to have him back as president is the fact that when he left office, he had a long list of achievements that he was proud of, such as the unification of Germany within NATO.

But things were not easy to accomplish, as historian Jeffrey Engel put it in his book, “When the World Seemed New”. There were quite a few issues regarding the situation of Germany and NATO, because then-British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and French President Francois Mitterand didn’t agree with Germany’s unification.

But that is not all, because then-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev didn’t even agree with the incorporation of former East Germany into NATO. However, George H.W. Bush knew when to insist and how to deal with problems, and in 1990, he fully supported West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl in his efforts and actions.

Progress or not?

As you probably know, it’s very hard to make everyone happy with your decisions, especially when you’re the head of a country that has a lot of influence globally and you have to make decisions based on many factors.

Just like with everything in life, things are even harder when you’re into politics because your decisions can impact the lives of people all over the world, not just those that live in the country where you’re the one who rules.

President Bush was considered by many as an internationalist and an Easterner by nature. Some sources say that from the moment he walked into the White House, he started to walk on a tightrope.

A member of the Republican Party himself, he had to make arrangements with a few Democrats who used to control both chambers. He hoped that everything would be fine between Republicans and Democrats, and it was, for a couple of years.
