You’ve probably already seen and used self-checkout registers or automated self-ordering kiosks. McDonald’s is one of the fast-food chains that is using automated kiosks in their restaurants. In fact, they started implementing them in 2015 and are planning to install even more at 14,000 of their restaurants by 2020.
Amazon is yet another giant that wants to make the most of artificial intelligence technologies. The popular retailer announced plans to have a cashier-less grocery store, called Amazon Go, where AI will keep track of what customers take out from the store with the help of infrared cameras and advanced algorithms. You will be able to do your shopping and leave the store without ever going to the cash register- an app on your smartphone will automatically charge you for your purchases.
According to the McKinsey report, about 1% of retail workers could lose their jobs in the next several years.
