You changed your bank

If you’ve closed or changed your bank account, got divorced or moved to another state and had to switch to a new bank, you should expect a delay in receiving your stimulus check. That’s because the IRS cannot send money to a bank account that does no longer exists.

If the payment was indeed made to a closed or inactive account, the bank is bound by law to return the money to the IRS. Even if you have other active accounts at the same bank, the institution cannot send the money to you. Unfortunately, it may take a few weeks before the payment is returned to the IRS and a check or debit card is issued and sent to you.
