Playing the Bass
Apparently, it’s all about that bass. In a recent case against the IRS, a successful bass player and music professor tried to deduct his travel costs to jazz rehearsals and performances in the attempt to stay in the groove and keep his playing skills on point.
The IRS claimed he could not write-off such costs because playing bass was something that he liked doing and performing was not part of his teaching responsibilities. In spite of everything, the Tax Court allowed the bass player/music teacher to deduct his travel expenses because the skills, knowledge and experience accumulated on stage were put into practice during the classes with his students.
