Louisiana
Living in Louisiana does have its perks. Its low cost of living, variety of amenities and activities, distinctive foods and laid-back lifestyle, make it an attractive destination. When it comes to taxes, the Bayou State applies income tax rates ranging from 2% to 6%. However, Louisiana does not tax Social Security retirement benefits or income from public pensions.
Find out if Louisiana has made it onto our Top 10 States with the Lowest Property Taxes!

North Carolina
North Carolina’s personal income tax rate is 5.25%, but Social Security beneficiaries are exempt from such tax. Senior citizens and retirees in the Tar Heel State do have to pay taxes for other types of retirement income such as the state’s sales and property taxes. It still makes it a pretty good place to spend your golden years.

I think it’s double taxation. First we pay when we make the money, then we pay when we receive what we have paid into, and already been taxed on. I really don’t understand this process. The checks are so small anyway, but take out the God awful taxes, and you could almost make it on what you get. Don’t understand.
Thank Ronald Reagan for that. Social Security began being taxed during his Time in the White House.
Don, I lived in Massachusetts for a long time, and when I retired with my state pension, my Social Security was prorated on my pension and drastically cut, thanks, as you say, to Ronald Reagan.. I get a net check of $373/month. It’s been the same amount for five years, since my Medicare costs rise every year. It angers me greatly to think about this! Legislation to correct this abomination has lingered in Congress for years!
Taxes on Social Security was passed by the House of Representatives which had a Democrat majority.
Check how government really works before you comment.
The taxation of Social Security began in 1984 following passage of a set of Amendments in 1983, which were signed into law by President Reagan in April 1983. These amendments passed the Congress in 1983 on an overwhelmingly bi-partisan vote.
Ronald Regan ran on the platform, ” no new taxes…” later , “read my lips, no new taxes “. So much for platform (lies) promises…..
Reagan was a horrible President he screwed the small person, he was out of touch!
jeff kerber— That would be Pres Bush
Another dumb Dem.
Read my lips, no new taxes was Bush senior. Bush Jr tried to get congress to change social security to individual accounts so that money would belong to you ( or your estate ). Democrats decried that the poor would not know how to manage the money and all of it should be left in a “pool”. ( This way they can dip into it again as the government has twice before, Incidentlally, some of those senators are still in congress, one of them in the White House )!
Jeff: “Read my lips. No new taxes.” was George HW Bush.
Notjing becomes law by just the House, the Senate and the President have to also concur.
Your first mistake was living in the state of Massachusetts. I made that same mistake, but corrected it.
You can blame the Democrats in Congress for that, not Ronald Reagan.
You forgot to mention you worked for the State and that’s why you get pro rated. State pensions are liKe that.
:Nancy, I agree. You can collect a pension from a private co & SS, but if it’s a state pension, SS is adjusted. My husband worked all his life out of HS. For the last 15 yes worked in a stare job. He died before even retiring. I am not eligible to collect his SS as a beneficiary because I just retired from a State Job. Who gets all that money he pd into SS?
You are wrong the tax on social security was passed during a democratic presidents term
You’re wrong. Look it up. Reagan signed H.R. 1900 in 1983. Reagan was President from ’81 to ’89.
No, you are wrong. It was passed in 1984, hen Ronald Regan was president. Un l exx he changed political affiliation I. 1984, the president was republican.
You are absolutely correct. Smart girl.
Wrong Al Gore voted to tax SS , the vote was a tie and he stepped in and voted yes to the tax.
This is about State taxation. Sounds like you are conflating State taxation with Federal taxation.
Exactly. Ronald Reagan ALSO changed the Social Security law so that as a teacher who has worked a second job his ENTIRE LIFE, I am INELIGIBLE for all of the Social Security that I (and my employer) have been paying into for my entire life …because he (and the Republicans at that time) deemed it to be ‘double dipping’ the retirement system. Just another example of how the Republican party turned their backs on hard working Americans in order to support the needs of business and the wealthy class, and NOT the struggling working class. It’s a disgrace.
No, Ronald Reagan tried to abolish Social Security. He was in favor of private retirement funds (mostly due to mismanagement and pork spending rapidly depleting the SS funds account). Our representatives and senators were all for it because they would be coming in on a windfall of available funds while millions of people would be left soon facing retirement with no future income. He was met with opposition when he proposed that everyone who had contributed to SS would be paid back every cent they had ever paid in to include what employers paid in on each person’s account. I was in school at the time and we studied this in depth while it was occurring.
This is all about State Income Tax, everyone subjected to the Federal Taxes on Social Security but if you have no other income, it is highly unlikely that you will have to pay anything. In my case my wife and I have $30,000. in Social Security benefits and have never had to pay any tax, just the usual for Medicare. and luckily, we live in Michigan, no State or City taxes on Social Security.
The social security tax legislation went to legislation in 1983 Thank Joe Biden, he voted twice to tax our Social Security, in 1983 and again in 1993. In 1983 only 50% was allowed taxable under Reagan. In 1993, under Clinton that percentage was bumped up to 85%. This was approved to be used to bolster the SS Trust Fund, not for general revenue. But we know what happens to ALL of our money we send to washington dc, they spend it on Pork!
In early 1968 President Lyndon Johnson made a change in the budget presentation by including Social Security and all other trust funds in a”unified budget.” This is likewise sometimes described by saying that Social Security was placed “on-budget.”
It was LBJ who used our Soc security benefits as a slush fund for welfare which is extended to every illegal in our country. Our Medicare benefits are also used to fund welfare and every illegal in our country.
It’s not your money, it belongs to the government, SHUT UP PEASANT.
How is it the government’s money when you gave it to them? And there’s no reason to be rude.
Really? how is it the Government’s money?? – We’ve paid into SSI for years so that we could receive benefits when ready to retire. This doesn’t make sense to me and also-why do we get taxed on money already taxed. What a mess!
I agree jack between me and my employer contributions in the years I worked it’s over $237,000 I’ll be long dead before I would collect anywhere near that
Bryan is just saying that in jest, but in this type of forum sometimes you cannot tell. He doesn’t mean it.
The gov NEVER contributed to SS. That was from the employee’s salary and the employer. The government is not any part of that so how is it their money? They feel they can recklessly spend it though.
Wrong we the people fund social security and that the politicians steal from.
You must be one of them
Bryan
My hat is off to you for graduating 3rd grade.
you are wrong we paid in that money to s/s not the gov they just wanted what they could get and they keep helping themselves to what dont belong to them. Bryan Herring you should check what your saying before you say something stupid.
You are so right, Janice! It’s robbery!!
Oklahoma also does not tax Social Security. The taxable portion of Social Security on the federal return is taken as a deduction in arriving at Oklahoma taxable income.
Used to think we lived in the best country in the world. Its sad to see so few impose their will on so many. At one time I could proclaim “this really is a wonderful place to live and bring up a family” without being canceled.
Its like we can never do enough, as though we have not made significant gains in the past several decades.
I fell like the abused child or spouse who keeps getting kicked no matter how hard they try.
Its very difficult staying positive and moving forward with a positive attitude when you are considered enemy number 1 by 50% of the population. All we want is to be left alone to live our lives the way we see fit.
Not looking for gratitude or validation just peace.
The USA is still the greatest, with all its faults. So many other countries treat their citizens like dirt. We here in the USA get to vote, I think it is unbelievable when a convicted drug user (crack cocaine) Mayor Marion Bradley can get reelected after being incarcerated for drugs, and people like Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Shummer and many others can keep getting reelected,
I agree. I had full time jobs that contributed to SS and worked a 2nd job while working for the state. My husband worked in shops right out HS. He died before retiring! I can not collect his SS as a beneficiary because I collect a state pension. The only one I can collect is the portion of the amt from my part-time jobs. I had a bigger allowance growing up. “Double Dipping” is a crock of bull. The state NEVER funded SS. Too many people that never contributed to it are collecting it – employees that worked ” under -the-rtable”, illegal aliens. I had a harder time legitimately getting the final payment from a flexible spending account my husband had to pay his final hospital bill.. I had to get an attorney to get them to release money witheld form HIS pay to pay the bill. They need this kind of monitoring for the EBT cards the so freely hand out in MA..
There are many more states than listed above that do not tax Social Security benefits as income. In fact, there are only 13 states that do consider Social Security benefits as taxable income.
what states are those that are not listed?
You’re absolutely correct – I live in one of those states – NY doesn’t tax SS benefits
people you have to understand and that is SSI IS MONEY GIVEN TO YOU BUT IT IS NOT FUNDED BY OUR MONEY AND SSDI OR RETIREMENT ARE WHAT IS PUT IN BY US AND TAXED WHEN PUT IN AND SO IT IS CONSTANTLY BEING FUNDED.THE REASON YOU SEE AN OFFSET IN PAY IS WHEN THEY DEDUCT FUNDS IT IS CALLED A WINDFALL,MEANING THE SUPPLEMENT THEY PAY YOU IS TAKEN OUT OF YOUR CHECK SO THEY CAN PAYBACK THE UNFUNDED ACCOUNT WITH SSDI OR RETIREMENT FUNDS.COMMON SENSE IS YOU NEED A CONSTANT FLOW OF MONEY GOING THROUGH THE SYSTEM TO KEEP IT RUNNING AND NOT COMPLETELY IMPLODE AND CRASH.
someone has to be double taxed in order to support the deplorables who refuse to work. The few working people in this country are taxed to death and it is not going to change.
Yes and the abuse is atrocious.
You may have awakened some states like New Jersey and they will probably started developing a new tax bill already!
dOES kENTUCKY TAX SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS?
I live in Alabama which I hope is one of the states that doesn’t tax SS income. After bills my increase was
$12. per month. What about the 5.9% figure I hear being talked about for this year. Is that going to be a
real number or not. We live paycheck to paycheck so I hope it is for real. Can you send me a list of the 26
states that don’t tax SS?
Elwin
The 26 states are:
?
.
.?
I clicked on everything and all I get are ads or the next article or people comments turning this into a political BS.
Please stop saying low cost of living in Louisiana. Bring your ass to New Orleans and you will see we are just as expensive as other big cities. Do your home work.
How did they clean that toilet so good!
Biggest joke on here is Washington state. You should really mention that though WA state does not have “personal income tax” – Washington state taxes anything and EVERYTHING they can, if they could they would tax the air you breathe! Nation’s highest sales tax is in WA, Property taxes are through the roof, then there is the sugar tax, sin tax, gas tax, tax tax tax!!!
My name is Paul. I live in Michigan. When now Gov. Whitener was running for office, one of her campain promises was to elimate taxes on our S.S. she never did. Right now the sate is very rich. All she seems to care about is Is the poor and monorities. For their up and coming vote. Well, she may not get mine, because The taxes on gas and broken promise on taxes!
President Biden is the most disgusting man that has ever stepped in the White House . He’s breaking the law and destroying the country through overpopulation. He cares nothing about the American people or about America
It is important to note that Maryland does not tax your social security once you turn 65. Before that, it is taxed. I know. I drew mine at 62 and it was taxed until I turned 65. Of course, that was almost 10 years ago so maybe that has changed.
which states are they?
Where is the list?
Why are you democrats playing ignorant on this? Democrats had a majority in Congress when Reagan was the President. Gore was the tie breaker in the Senate. If you dislike your ss money being taxes, put the blame on the democrats. Such hypocrisy.
Privatize SS
he was framed it was antifa
Absolutely EVERYONE in the USA should be ANTIFA(scist). To not be is an incredible slap in the face to the hundreds of thousands of military and civilians of USA citizens who gave their lives in World War II. They fought fascism to insure the preferred way of life in the USA our parents and grandparents wanted when they left the places of their birth to give those of us born in the USA a better life.
That is the ultimate sign of disrespect to our elders and ancestors.
Ronal Reagan DID NOT start taxing SS, nice try propagandists, he tightened enforcement of social security disability payments because it was being abused like most government programs, Bill Clinton taxed Social Security! It was Bill Clinton’s Tax Reform Act of 1993 that raised taxes on Social Security!
I live in Tennessee, there is no state Income tax here. However the good old Democrats have taken care of things and as much as 85% of my social security has be subject to Federal Income Tax every year since retiring.
Unless I missed it, New York State does not tax SS benefits either.
That’s not true about Pennsylvania. I just filed my taxes and there’s a limit that you’re allowed to earn yearly before you have to pay tax on Social Security. I think that amount is $25,000.
I work all my life and for health reasons I am still working and now because I am working full time S a. Addiction Counselor which I love helping people I have to pay on my social security. I work to make enough money to pay for everything to live without stress
BS! Texas DOES tax SS!
Why is it so hard to print an article on one page? Why must we have to follow a 12 page report on this page wait here comes the next page. N now I’m lost where did the article go?
Why isn’t Illinois Jon the list. They do not tax any retirement income.
Tennessee has no state income tax. Al Gore had nothing to do with it. In fact when Gore ran for President he lost his home box, home county, former congressional district and home state. Bush won in a landslide.
It is double taxation!
