8. US-41

US-41 is the only road that is a non-interstate highway mentioned on this list. This road goes southwest from Michigan’s upper peninsula, then it continues its course through Milwaukee, Chicago, Nashville, Atlanta, until it reaches Miami.

Snowstorms and ice wreak havoc on the highways in the north. On the other edge, in the southern end, you can find  Hillsborough County, Florida, which has the highest rate of traffic deaths in the U.S.

In 2019, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported 141 fatal accidents along US-41, with 7.02 fatalities per 100 miles.

7. I-80

The second road on this list is called I-80 and it runs 2,900 miles from San Francisco, California to Teaneck, New Jersey, making it one of the country’s longest freeways.

I-80 is extremely dangerous due to a combination of high-speed restrictions, heavy semi-truck traffic, and high winds in certain spots. In 2019, there were 7.21 fatalities per 100 kilometers on the route, which makes a total number of 209 deaths.

6. I-70

From Utah to Maryland, I-70 runs east-west through Denver, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore. According to some data, in 2019, there were 158 deaths or 7.35 deaths per 100 miles.

Steep hills, tight curves, and harsh weather can be found on stretches of the highway, such as the section that goes through Colorado. The scenery is lovely, but be careful and don’t try to take a picture while driving.

5. I-40

From Barstow, California, to Wilmington, North Carolina, the highway called I-40 runs east-west, passing through Albuquerque, Oklahoma City, Memphis, Nashville, and Raleigh.

It has the second-highest number of total fatalities, which is 253. However, due to its long length, this only equates to 9.89 deaths per 100 miles.

Because of the enormous amount of vehicles that use it, especially during the summer, this road has been classified as one of the most dangerous highways in practically every state it passes through.
