Gift cards
Gift cards are extremely popular in general and particularly when it comes to holiday presents. In fact, according to the National Retail Federation, almost 60% of surveyed people said they would like to receive at least one gift card this Christmas. It’s really no wonder, considering that last year approximately $100 billion was invested in gift cards.
“Gift cards are safe, secure and in-demand gift options,” says Erin Wood of the Retail Gift Card Assn. “Unfortunately, like all payments tools, criminals have found ways to abuse gift cards.”
One way for scammers to get their piece of the pie is to find out the card number and peel back the stickers placed on the card’s PIN. With that information, they go online and make all sorts of purchases with whatever money you have on the card.
