23 Rare Historical Photos Never Exposed Until Now

6. How’s This for Happiness?

This famous photograph from 1973 shows air force fighter pilot Lt. Col Robert Stirm after his release as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, where he was held for six years. It was the first time his family sees him after his disappearance.

This is all part of “Operation Homecoming,” where a prisoner exchange was held between the U.S. and Vietnamese governments. This award-winning photo is called “Burst of Joy” and all of Stirm’s four children have it hung on their walls today.
